Reflection upon Teaching Radio Journalism & Practicum – Part 8

Social Media Promotion
Warm Talks #3 : Suara Hati Musik by Warm Talks • A podcast on Anchor
December 2020
The month of December will be the last month of odd semester in UPH. December will also be the last month of me teaching radio journalism to my students. And if you remember on my first blog, it is written that the month of December will become the fourth or evaluation phase of this radio class; I will have to deliver the grades upon finish listening to all my students’ podcasts project. Some or many of them are excited to have this project as their final as well as practicum assignments; it is reflected on their podcast scripts. (Yes, just like on radio, we have to write our scripts prior to recording. It is a training for our mind to work on some kind of management before broadcasting it).
So, as an overall evaluation, I would say that I’m quite satisfied with what we achieved as a radio class. All 27 students managed to produce 4 programs within 5 weeks. Although, not all students got an A, but all students experienced what practicum is like in the area of audio medium.
Thank you.

Comparison between Podcasting and Radio Broadcasting – Differences #9 and 10.
Carly Scheffer*, Dec 29, 2020.
In not more than three days, we will all be leaving the year 2020 and entering the year 2021. A lot of things, significant things happened in this year 2020. A lot of turbulences and deaths happen in this year. We face health problem-pandemic, we have to combat this disease by applying tons of health protocols, including health protocols in education fields. Education technology must be embraced to continue the studying-learning process.
Education technology I’m referring to in this text is PODCAST. This “personal or playable on demand” broadcast, in general may serve as:
- Social media for the owner.
- Educational tools; people can learn by creating and listening to a podcast.
#9 – NEW MEDIA
As I mentioned earlier on my blog, podcast can be produced by anyone, any individuals as long as they have internet connection, they have the standard equipment for audio recording and of course, most importantly, they have message(s) to convey. It is then a social medium, because everyone can have it and everyone can listen to it. Social media is an umbrella term which refers to computer or mobile application used for socializing virtually. There are many types of social media, for example:
- social networks,
- social publishing and news,
- social niche communities,
- social bookmarking,
- social streaming,
- and many more.
Podcast belongs to social streaming. Under each type you notice, there are many global brands or what we call with social media vehicles. Spotify and Anchor.fm are the social media brands for podcast.
New media is a terminology that expounds convergence among technology, digital communication which are computerized and interconnected to one-another. Digital technology is new media. Content is king in new media. New media exists because there is old media. Some of old media extinct, e.g. pager, gramophone and some have actually refashioned themselves just like a butterfly from a chrysalis for example: radio, television, telephone, books, newspaper even library or bookstore. Some of the old media are still neighboring with the new media.
So, even though both are mainly audio medium, both needs music/ songs and both employs similar equipment and both delivers messages to lots of people, but radio is a mass medium, while podcast is new/ social media. It is different.
Despite the difference, new media is also similar to these ‘two brothers’. Radio nowadays, must have, must exist and must deliver its message through new media as well. It is only natural nowadays, if a radio station has Facebook, IG, Twitter and YouTube. And that they actually broadcast their contents through their social media.

#10 – MUSIC
The usage of music is very much different between podcast channel and radio station. Related to #9, radio station is mass media. Radio stations in Indonesia, formed an association (PRSSNI – Persatuan Radio Siaran Swasta Nasional Indonesia). PRSSNI association signed a memorandum of agreement with music association. Having said that, we in radio stations can play or broadcast any kind of music. After all, music is created to be listened to and the channel to broadcast music is radio (& then TV, but remember on TV you need to have music video, not just music). Radio and artists (musician, singer, song writer, producer) need each other and we are having symbiotic mutualism. When I was working in a radio station, not only do I get to play those songs, but I also get free sample CDs from the artists themselves. In other words, artists need radio people to promote their music, vice versa radio needs music to fill the air time. This does not happen in podcast channel. You can only use copyright-free music, or if you are an artist yourself, you can easily create a podcast channel to promote your work. I consider myself lucky enough to live in an era where technology evolves; as an announcer I experienced playing music with a cassette, compact disc and MP3 files.
Tamara Kristina created WARM TALKS for her radio final exam. In episode 2, she interviewed myself actually as her communication lecturer. We talked mainly about branding. I started my teaching career since 2007 and ever since, I have taught strategic brand communication, PR & Branding, Personal Branding.

In Episode 3, Tamara interviewed Afrisca Resista – a student from UPH Music department. In this episode, you will find Afrisca performed GRETCHEN AM SPINNRADE (Composer: Franz Schubert). Just like any other teens, Afrisca faced a dilemma in choosing her major. And just like any other music student, she also faced questions from her parents (can’t you put music just as hobby? Definitely not as a study program). Tamara did pose an interesting question, how can you as an artist/ vocalist influence your audience’s emotion through your performance? Well, Afrisca responded with such interesting tips too and that is COMMUNICATION. An artist must be able to speak the song by staring at audience’s eyes. Afrisca’s minor is vocal therapy (similar to communication department, we have 3 minors: broadcasting, public relations and marketing communication).

If you would like to give comments on this particular topic, please feel free to do so. These 10 differences might be not enough, but I shall continue in the next year. I thank Mr. Harry Smals in Holland for not only allowing me to write on his blog but also showcase my students’ final projects. This blog (HarrysHead) is also part of social media and one of social media’s role is to encourage social learning. This short writing is intended to take part in social learning.
