From August to September 2020, I taught Radio Journalism & Practicum via online mode. And it is 100% ONLINE (delivery is using video meetings/ conferences using ZOOM & MS TEAMS and also learning management system provided by MS TEAMS). There are 4 phases within this communication class subject:

  1. Theory,
  2. Assignments & Practices,
  3. Broadcasting it,
  4. Evaluation process.

In the theory phase, we talked about basically what is RADIO all about. So on September 30, 2020, I invited a vocal teacher to teach my communication students in a subject called “Vocal Technique” which is tailored to the needs of broadcasters.

Ms.Josphine Polim – my fellow teacher from Music department of Universitas Pelita Harapan, will also be featured in the podcasts that we would like to share in the near future.

So, in a nutshell, this blog titled “Podcast versus Broadcast”will highlight all my lessons-learned, my teaching points in class as well as the best podcasts from my journalism students batch 2018. Should you want to contact me, below are the best ways to reach me.

Comparison between Podcasting and Radio Broadcasting

For me, the word PODCAST was introduced way back even since the year 2000. However, not until the year 2019, I started paying attention to it. I even made and participated in a workshop-learning how to make a podcast this year 2020. One reason is actually because of this pandemic situation, we – students & teachers – cannot meet in a classroom on a daily basis as if in normal learning condition. Because of this virus Covid-19, all the teaching-learning process must be conducted using the help of technology a.k.a. using full online learning mode. Our campus is quite well-advanced in incorporating technology in learning (I can be proud of it in one sense). However, talking about delivering subject materials that are very hands-on or in other words – very practical, it creates some challenges (at least from my side as a teacher).

I started my broadcasting career since the year 2000 and began teaching radio subjects since the year 2007.  I have had my youngest broadcast students of 6th grade of elementary students while the oldest broadcast students of mine would be a 60-year-old grandmother. I gave radio trainings not only in Java island but also Sumatra, Kalimantan, Bali, Papua and the farthest is the Philippines. I delivered radio trainings in normal situation for example to junior high-schoolers, enabling them to make radio school but I also taught in less normal situations (disaster-affected area) particularly in the role of how radio can save lives. So, my own lesson learned: radio is for everyone, youngsters to elderly; radio can also reach different areas or regions in Indonesia (even abroad); both in normal and in crisis situation and since this medium is mainly audio, I’ve had people with disabilities as my radio students. These experiences lead me to the conclusion that radio is indeed everyone’s medium. Secondly, even though, we have visuals in our studio (say a video camera) but audio, I think is still the main characteristic of radio.

How about podcast?

Well, looking back to my first reason above, where as a radio teacher, I must deliver materials that are very practical. How do I do that? In the normal situation (before pandemic), we came to class for more theoretical topics and on another weeks, we came to studio to do hands-on training. These practicum sessions cannot be executed due to pandemic covid-19. Therefore, as a replacement, I came up with an idea for my communication students to create their own podcast shows from their own homes (please remember that we are on social distancing regulation from the government). In the coming weeks, this blog PODCAST VS BROADCAST will showcase on analysis of differences between narrowcasting and broadcasting as a reflection on my personal lesson-learned about the topic, and also about my teaching points in class as well as the topics being discussed by academicians from UPH- Universitas Pelita Harapan (the content of podcast itself).

Kindly excuse for the language that we use is in Bahasa Indonesia (only 2 or 3 recordings will be done in English). However, I will write the summary in English, to give you some ideas on the topic being podcasted. Monday, October 19, 2020, I joined a 2-hour workshop on how you can create your own podcast. It’s a new world for me and distinctively different from the world of broadcasting that I know. These differences will be discussed on the coming volumes. Right now, I will summarize the points of difference that are quite apparent between these 2 media:

  1. Name & Terms
  2. Duration
  3. Format
  4. Structure
  5. Timer
  6. Sponsorships
  7. Broadcasting style
  8. Broadcast show
  9. New Media

I may not be meticulous in pinpointing all the aspects of these 2 media, therefore, kindly drop me some of your ideas and let us discuss.

Despite the differences, podcast & radio have 3 things in common:

  1. the strength is in audio,
  2. consistency in broadcasting it,
  3. both have entered the new media era.
